The Direct-to-Home (DTH) wars are looming, with every DTH service provider trying to outsmart the other by bringing in more and more features and a wide array of content to their packages. However, this is one war where it’s the customers who will be benefited.
Dish TV and Tata Sky are currently the two major DTH providers in the country, with Bharti and Reliance almost ready to enter the pond. Both Dish TV and Tata Sky recently entered into a tie-up with two matrimonial web-sites making it easy to browse through the profiles right from your TV. While Dish TV announced a tie-up with Shaadi.com, Tata Sky already began their ‘Active Matrimony’ service with a tie-up with BharatMatrimony. We broke the news for both the tie-ups on the same day.
Now, Tata Sky plans to stay on top of the competition by riding the same tie-ups train. Apparently, Tata Sky has now planned to tie up with Sony Pictures and Fox News Corp for content in order to enhance its pay-per-view portfolio. The company currently has a dedicated channel for movies, called ‘Active Showcase’ which offers a select few movies from prices ranging from Rs. 50 - Rs 75. The tie-up entitles Tata Sky to receive content such as movies and telecast of special events through their channels.
MD and CEO of Tata Sky, Vikram Kaushik, was quoted as saying:
We are in discussions with Sony Pictures and Fox for content, but it is too early to comment on the the content or the time-frame. As regulations mandate that no DTH player can create and own content, we are forced to go to sources.
Both Sony Pictures and Fox have a wide variety of content, which is expected to enhance the viewer experience, if things go as planned. It would be interesting to see how many new movies come our way via these companies.
Tata Sky has also won an award for its Live Darshan services, an initiative that brings live video from six different religious places in the country. This video is brought to the subscribers through the company’s website and through a channel ‘Active Darshan’ on the company’s DTH service. The initiative has brought Tata Communications, the Silver Award for ‘Best Progress in Emerging Markets - Live Video’ at Visiongain’s Mobile Content Awards, 2008.
Tata Communications have installed live feed equipments at six of the religious places in the country which is managed 24×7 by a dedicated team. The company now plans to integrate this feed with mobile operators’ content, and will be made available in two modes - Live Streaming and Video on Demand (VoD). The places include Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai, Shirdi Sai Baba, ISKON and Kashi Vishwanath. The live feed currently has a viewership of around 1 billion people all around the globe.
Update : TATA Sky looks to go big on movies. Now, TATA Sky users can order movies from seventymm.com to rent 30 original movies for just Rs. 299/month and watch it on their home theatre systems. Now, that’s what we call combinign affordability with ease of access. However, it still needs to be pondered upon whether the movies shall be available all throughout the day, the way it already does with its ‘ShowCase’ feature, or would the customers be able to choose the timings for themselves! Anyway, both ways, I doubt if any one would be complaining. Oh by the way, just in case you happen to be a TATA Sky user and dig for this offer, do visit cribb.in for special invites and save Rs. 199 on registration!
