The Need For OLPC In India. Is Anil Ambani Joining In ?

I have always believed we need better, more affordable computing resources. OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) always looked like a good solution for this. That the project always ran into one problem or the other is a different story. Many people still question, the original idea of providing a laptop for $100. Even Intel, who was supporting the project at one point, pulled out few months back. We had an interesting reply about why Intel pulled out of the One Laptop Per Child project from Intel’s Leighton Phillips in an exclusive interview with WATBlog.
Though the development took a bit longer and we had stuff like ASUS Eee PC emerging in the market by that time, theer were still interests in OLPC.
And now, this Anil Ambani might be readying up to join the OLPC project, reports The Economic Times.
Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the OLPC project will be meeting Anil Ambani next week to discuss a possibility for collaboration, the report says.
Currently the OLPC tests the XO Laptop in the Khairat village in Maharashtra. We do not have details regarding the specifics of the nature of meeting or association between Anil Ambani and OLPC, but evidently it might be related to the telecommunication business of Anil Ambani.
OLPC India head Satish Jha says:
“We recognise that school education is a state subject and those who need most help are part of that system. We will be glad if the government plans to use XO in its school systems. India’s corporate sector can also make a huge difference to bridge this divide and we will appeal to them as well. We have made some progress on each front. However, given the sheer scale of what needs to be done, we have a long way to go,”
India can actually do with a pilot project testing the XO laptops in Indians schools. The way we went and set an example for the digital cinema installation to the world, we can do the same with the XO laptop here. Once again, our lack of affordability and sheer size of our population might prove to be our biggest strengths.
