Rediff Opens API.. Announces Developer Platform At Proto.in
Email It!
Rediff.com announced the launch of its developer program at Proto.in (http://developer.rediff.com). This move comes after the huge success of both facebook and orkut developer platforms which have activated the apps development business the world over. We had broken the story earlier of Rediff integrating orkut and facebook feeds and were pleasantly surprised at the innovative feature by rediff.
We spoke to Zaki Ansari the Head Platforms at rediff.com who said that this developer platform essentially means that “The entire rediff would be programmable!”
The developer platform project isnamed ‘Sociali’ and Rediff iShare their video sharing platform is the first property of Rediff.com that is opened for application developers.
So How Does Rediff Plan to Attract Developers?
Well as they say there is no bigger incentive than money. Rediff.com announced financial grants upto 2.5 lakhs for innovative applications! Now that is some incentive as there are already Indian developers who have been creating apps for facebook and orkut and many of them for fre! Besides for this Zarik Ansari from rediff said said that just like facebook developers would be allowed to monetise their own apps.
What will this move mean to rediff content?
Quoting from the official release Rediff.coms’ Chief Technology Officer, Venki Nishtala said, “Our vision is to extend our platforms to external developers to build innovative and unique applications which will make Rediff.com services richer and engaging for our users”.
Zaki Ansari clarified that rediff’s own content, editorial and applications would co-exist with the developer application platform. He also said that he wouldn’t mind even if competitors like indiatimes and others created applications as long as the users accept it and it creates value. Essentially this platform is rediff’s move to shift from controlling content to giving up all control for ugc driven value creation.
So how does one go about creating an application?
The developers’ site (http://developer.rediff.com) includes all the required documentation, sample code and developer forums to help developers to build applications for the platform easily. Developers who have innovative application ideas can logon to the developers’ site and submit their ideas. Out of all the entries 10 shortlisted candidates will be given grants to bring their ideas to life.
