SKS Microfinance is one organization I have always been a fan of. Working on the model of microeconomics, SKS Microfinance has done quite well for itself, and more importantly, for thousands of poor living in villages. The way they worked and their policy of giving soft-loans to the women in villages had paid well in the past.

And just when we have began to wonder how to fill the digital divide between those living in metros and those in villages, comes the news of Airtel partnering with SKS Microfinance to provide mobile service to those living in villages. Airtel will be providing free SIM cards to the members of SKS while Nokia has been roped in as the handset partner, reports Business Standard.

Elango T, CEO (mobile services), Airtel, said

“The initial Airtel-SKS launch is in four branches - Jogipet, Medak, Ramayampet and Siddipet. It will be launched at all the branches in Andhra Pradesh whereby 750,000 members will be benefited with this tie-up,”

A welcome step given the huge number of people that live in villages. The need for information is as crucial as in cities there. A mobile in each hand might go a long way in improving the condition of those struggling to get even one square meal a day.
