RCom (formerly Reliance Communication) has been trying to get a GSM license, that’s old news. The more interesting news (yess!) is that the rest of the GSM operators had refused to provide any link to Reliance’s GSM service. This, because, they claimed that RCom’s GSM service comes under a new license and therefore there should be fresh negotiations with the GSM operators like Bharti and Vodafone. But, as The Hindu reports, TRAI has directed the GSM operators to provide the interconnection to RCom’s new GSM service.

Acording to TRAI (and well, ahemm..RCom itself) the setting up of GSM service by RCom is a part of the original Unified License provided to Reliance way back. According to that license, RCom is allowed to offer telephony service using both the technologies, CDMA and GSM.

There are around 200 million existing GSM subscriber in India. Had the other players had their way, the users of RCom’s GSM service wouldn’t have been able to call these existing GSM subscribers.

Now that TRAI has directed them to offer link to RCom, the other operators have no choice but to comply.
