Professional and “hardcore” gaming seems to have gone off in a big way, in India. WATGame.com had taken an exclusive interview with Sanjit Daniel, CEO of Rocking Pixels, that’s responsible in creating a 3D game on the recently released Priyanka Chopra starrer, Love Story 2050. While going through, I realized that Indian companies are finally looking up to cyber gaming in a big way. Although Daniel refuses to call it a “game”, he plans “to make smaller 3D gaming experiences aimed at competetive events which help publicize the movie as well as 3D gaming in India.”
To an extent, I too share his concern of the success of a full fledged 3D game in India. Although the concept of extending the brand of a movie with accessories had caught up in India since a long time, this is the first time Bollywood has taken gaming seriously. The way online social media and blogs have been used as platforms to leverage the recall power of a movie, it was high time even games were given their due credit. There is a huge potential of increasing revenues with advertising, what with brands like Amul setting up shops in Second Life.
Despite everything, the fact that Sanjit plans to target the CS and DoTA gamers as the target audience is a point of concern. It is important to realize that such gamers form a cult and have been playing for the same game, with various mods of course, for years now. Moreover, it is very important to, rather, target the market that is still untapped, like the average office goer or a house wife or may be the old grandfather who normally feels neglected in his own household. In his bid to capture audience off the youth, there is an important market that he misses. Moreover, it takes a lot less effort to engage the bracket afore mentioned as compared to the gamer “youth”. What also concerns me is the fact that the movie itself, LoveStory 2050, got bombed in the box office, what future can the industry analysts predict for the game!
Anyway, we are still happy that the gaming platform is, at the very least, given attention to. It is a great start towards building up a huge cyber gaming community in the country. Here’s wishing all the best to Rocking Pixels.
