Frustrated with the constant downtimes and problems Twitter has been having for the past few months? Unhappy that the IM bot is not working or the API requests are too less to tweet? What if you could run your own Twitter like service, right from your own home?

Well, now you can. Presenting, Laconi.ca, the Open Source µ-blogging (micro blogging) tool based on Twitter. Laconi.ca provides the source code for download, meaning you can get the code, configure it on your own server and get it up and running within minutes.

Twitter has been in the news quite often lately. We have written about how a user almost auctioned off his profile and how the world seems to use twitter.

Laconi.ca has a live demo of the code running up at Identi.ca. The site/script also supports OpenID. The interesting thing to note about Laconi.ca is that members of one site can subscribe to users’ updates from another site running the same script. This is known as OpenMicroBlogging specification.

So how do you get your own twitter site up and running? One of the geeks out there has authored a nice and long tutorial on how to get the Lacnoni.ca script running on your server.

I’m going to play with the source code and try and get it running on my server. Let’s see whether the script has what it takes to be called a ‘twitter clone’. Here are a few example sites running Laconi.ca (Disclaimer: We are not related to these sites in any way)

1. Identi.ca
2. Cafeonica
3. Bartle

technically everything is easy to build
but the building is also a process that involves the users

pre-baked solutions work in enterprise and not in consumer internet space !
