Cricket can undoubtedly be called the ‘Game of the Country’. If I went around the city walking on a fine sunday morning, I would find a million places where cricket matches are underway and the little ‘Tendulkars’ and ‘Dhonis’ are sweating it out for their team. We have also covered cricket related action on the web and mobile be it the IPL website wars or the IPL team website/community analysis. There was also a fanclub launched for IPL.

The  IPL was one of the best marketed and possibly the most watched cricket tournament of the century but did its also make a huge impact beyond the TV screens? All of us know about the IPL official site IPLT20.com, where online visitors could watch the matches live on their computer screens. The site also provided photos, videos, stats and analysis about each match from the IPL.

Indiantelevision is reporting that the site managed to attract 50 million page views during the course of IPL from over 5.2 million unique visitors. The scorecard, attracted 5.2 million page views over the course of the 24 match tournament. The site also made to the users.

Mark Melville, the chief corporate development officer for Live Current Media Inc, the company behind the IPLT20 site, said

Generating over 50 million page views without a single dollar of marketing investment clearly indicates the natural demand for, interest in and ease of access to the IPLT20.com site. Online sports media in general and cricket specifically offers the breadth and depth global fans seek through any-time interaction, enabling access to multiple layers of content, photos and video from any Internet connection, 24-hours a day for live or archived content.

Rahul Dravid and Dhoni must be the country’s favorite players, as the match between Bangalore Royal Challengers and Chennai Super Kings drew the most visitors, being the most watched match with 2.2 million views.

It is interesting to see the evolution of online media as a medium to serve content, something that has been always done via traditional media such as TV and Radio. By providing live and archived content that was readily updated by the minute, the IPL site and Live Current Media Inc has set an example for others. The company now plans to launch the official BCCI site and global cricket site before August 2008.

Rajiv Adds: I dont agree with Mark’s statement “Generating over 50 million page views without a single dollar of marketing investment clearly indicates the natural demand for, interest in and ease of access to the IPLT20.com site.” Well after every ball bowled there was a ticker running log on to IPLT20.com on the TV screens. Given the huge following for the matches its not surprising that IPLT20 got the kind of traction it did. What they can do well though is continue to own the same domain name and scale the interactivity within the site for next season. I truely believe the TV + Web combo works where in TV plays the broadcast role and Web plays the narrowcast, conversation and engagement role post TV.

  1. hi rajiv, you are very right. generating 50 million views after telecasting the url on each match and each delivery is bound to have that effect. he is undermining the power of tv. and ususally marketers factor in the “notional cost” of advertising proxy on their own media as well. going by that Mr. mark it might have been atleast a $100,000 dollar campaign for iplt20.com

  2. The headline is a bit misleading. It should be 50 MM visits, not visitors since there is a huge difference in web jargon between the two! Numbers are pretty good for a website thats just come into play!

  3. i am sure 50 mn visits is good for a new site. but its a official website of the most popular game on india. the website itself got advertised 100’s of times in each of the 75+ matches. each match viewed by millions of viewes of whom 100’s of thousands would be netizens. so in the context it is not stunning

  4. well rightly said how many tymes they flashed the website out dere
so the outcome would be dere na
