EMI

EMI (Electric and Musical Industries Ltd.) has done it again! This time, they are suing social-networking site Hi5, video advertising start-up VideoEgg and 10 John Doe defendants for allegedly infringing on the copyrights of EMI content that appears on Hi5, particularly music videos.Hi5

EMI is prone to engage in lawsuits and no wonder, it has sued or threatened to sue AllofMP3, YouTube, Apple, MP3Tunes, XM Radio, Infospace (can’t really blame them there). Sources close to the lawsuit say that the parties have been trying to negotiate with EMI for more than a year to avoid disputes but no agreement was reached. The stance employed by EMI is stern and they have no intentions of giving-in to the shakedown attempt.

VideoEgg

VideoEgg, being a provider for video functionality to Hi5 in the past (although the deal ended in April 2008, and they no longer work together), is also on the hook. Presumably, the ten unnamed defendants are other service providers/executives of Hi5, VideoEgg, and those other companies accused.

This attitude of EMI clearly indicates that they hardly care about current encroachment, and are more interested in payoff for things of the past. I guess EMI have decided on litigation as a business model much like other dying companies, only difference being they’re doing it over copyrights instead of patents.
