The classifieds space is a crowded one in India with large vertical players like naukri, shaadi and consim info (previously bharatmatrimony) and many general players like indialist, indiaclassifieds, click.in etc There is also ebay invested kijiji which we had covered here before.

Now Kijiji is making a move to change its name to Quikr.com (This is the flickr hangover which doesn’t seem to stop!).

According to Jiby Thomas the Vp & Founder of Kijiji said that the key reason for the change in the brand is to better align with the long term objective of providing a fast, easy to use, fun and user-driven platform for the Indian Internet community.

Im not so sure how a name change can do a lot for the brand given that already some effort was made in making kijiji popular. But it seems that the objective with quikr is to extend beyond being just a classifieds and go into the realm of being a community. Also may be quikr sounds more web 2.0 .. Cheesy but Im sure that could have been a big factor given how many people are attracted by being 2.0 whether or not they can be or not.

Well quikr hasnt yet launched and the shift from kijiji to quikr is on as the site suggests so we shall wait and watch as to besides the name what else is different.
