Is Google planning to rename Picasa to Google Photos?

When it comes to online Photo Management, there are plenty of sites offering a wide variety of features and tools to upload, manage and publish those photos that you hold dear.
Flickr has always stood out of the crowd by being the leading photo publishing platform. After being acquired by Yahoo! in 2005, it has continued to attract the naive users, as well as the pros, by releasing features frequently. Even though the recent introduction of videos on Flickr drew some negative feedback, the site continues to hold its position in the fish pond of Online Photo Management Sites.
Google, on the other hand, even after being immensely popular in services like search and email, has failed to popularize its Photo Management Service - Picasa Web Albums. Founded in 2001, Picasa, Inc. was an independent digital photo management company, which Google acquired in 2004. However, ever since the acquisition, Google has not been able to make its mark into the Digital Photo Management scenario. No major features were released onto the site which offers a meagre 1GB of storage space per account. Picasa Web Albums also lack features, such as Statistics for the photos.
Google Operating System, yesterday, noticed references to some text in the source code suggesting that Google might rename or rebrand the service as Google Photos. Currently, trying to access http://photos.google.com redirects to Picasa Web Albums. However, one can notice that the official blog for the service is titled as “Google Photos Blog“.

As seen in the source code above, there are quite a few places where the site is referenced as ‘Google Photos’ and not ‘Picasa Web Albums’. The unofficial blog also found references in the code which suggests that Google might add new features to the service including the ability to upload photos via email, content licensing options, something which has been a part of flickr for a long time. One interesting feature is the ability to tag people in the photos. Google already offers a software called Picasa which lets you manage photos on your PC and publish them to the service.
Of course, we’ll never know for sure unless Google implements the above changes.
