Funding WindFall 2.0 - Canaan To Invest More & Walder Returns With More Money!

Well this is surely funding windfall 2.0 and if the earlier windfall was cut short by the dotcom bust this windfall will take some stopping if at all it can stop. The money seems to be pouring in from all directions in India. Those who have invested stay invested and are looking to invest some more and those who had invested earlier and gone back seem to be returing with more money this time around. Atleast that seems to be the case if you look at Canaan Partners and Walden venture Capital.

News has it that Canaan Partners which is a 20-year-old global venture capital (VC) fund with $3 billion under management and which is headed by Alok Mittal (Ex-Founder JobsAhead.com) in India is looking to up its investment in India. Canaan has already invested in five companies in India namely e4e, Bharatmatrimony, Cellcast, iYogi and TechTribe. Canaan has recently raised a $650-million global fund and about $150 million from that will be invested in India over the next three years. Typical funding slabs would range from $3-5 million in Series A so seed stage can forget approaching Canaan. And just like before the investments would be made in internet & digital media, mobile and enterprise services.
The other news on more funding is WaldenVenture Capital which seems to be returning to investing in India after a 5 year gap i.e. after the last dotcom bust. Walden will be looking at investing in startups across all sectors. The India office will be headed by Mr Rajesh Subramaniam who was the Chief Financial Officer of BPO firm Firstsource Solutions.
Looking at these two stories one can certainly sense a windfall of money coming in for entrepreneurs but still little money is coming in at the seed stage which is where I see large number of startups struggling. I think in 3 years time one would see many more startups scaling to the 3-5 Million band for funding. Hopefully the need to invest doesnt make the valuations go out of whack this time around.

Hi Rajiv !
