Now Ubuntu On Your Mobile Phone. Oh No! Wait! Not Yet

This article in PC World had me jump with joy. It spoke of Ubuntu being used as an operating system for Mobile devices. Ubuntu in my mobile, what could be better, I thought. But a little more reading made it clear that the release is actually a developer-only. And it’s not for mobile phones, but rather than Mobile Internet Devices. What’s the difference, you ask? Well, the recent availability of ultra-small form factor devices from some companies are the ones that it is targeted at. Although some of these devices , like Asus EEE-PC runs a full-version of Windows-XP or Linux already.
The current release is aimed at models running on Intel’s ATOM processors. ATOM are the processors aimed at powering the ultra-small computing devices, that Intel launched in March this year. Now this is good news for two reasons. 1.) Using Ubuntu as a platform means there is already a community of developers out there. To develop compatible applications for the new OS and  2.) the Atom platform means, the work gets easier for the developer. Common desktop applications can easily be ported on the ATOM platform.
I read a rumour somewhere that Apple is contemplating using the Atom processor for iPhone. If that goes true, sometime in the future, we can see a still lot of desktop applications being written for iPhone. Yes, including Microsoft Office.
For now, let’s just hope (dream?) that soon, Ubuntu is made available for our mobile phones, too.

I always thought that the ASUS EeePC was a smaller laptop with a flash-drive rather than an MID. Also, Ubuntu Notebook, the Ubuntu for MIDs, is already ported on the Samsung Ultra Q1.
If you REALLY want a taste of this you can emulate it on your desktop using xephyr
