How Does The World Use Twitter?
Twitter is a micro blogging site which has proved to be a powerful social media platform. Here are few points on how the world uses twitter.
- Research Tool – Once my close friend had said to me “when in doubt…keep shut.” But today I can surely prove him wrong. Today whenever I have a doubt I tweet about it. And very soon my followers answer to it. This is has also helped me for my research too.
- Networking – I think that I need not explain you that web 2.0 is all about socializing. But the main problem that I see is that everyone wants to speak and no one wants to listen. This is one of the reasons why people do not follow everyone who follows them. The best way to network with people on twitter is Listen, Participate, Contribute and Evaluate. This is a constant process which you need to follow and when carefully done you will enjoy the juicy fruits.
- News that I use – I am not the first one who does this. Many of the big bloggers get their story from twitter. And many of the leads which I blog is too from twitter. Besides this many news breaking on blogosphere is said to be from twitter.
- Branding – There was a time when people were known by the brands they work for. But now social media is changing the entire scenario. Now bloggers know the brands by the people who work for them. Mere brand name does not always work. If you search for brands in twitter the most common thing that you will notice is brands are following more number of people than people following them. While if you search for the person of that similar brand there are more chances of getting vice versa result. In case you are wondering why the answer is they are not following the golden rules of Listen, Participate, Contribute and Evaluate.
- Feedback – The popularity of twitter has led to rise of various applications like summize and tweetscan which help people to identify who is talking what. This has surely made twitter yet more killer application. Thus people can always get to know which brand is more popular and also if someone out there is screwing their brand.
- Traffic – This is one of the most common answers that I get from people when I ask them why are they on a social networking site or why do they tweet. At first there are very bright chances of you to get a decent traffic. But then again you should never forget that mere tweeting links will make your image as a spammer and not a real time networker. One must follow the golden rules as it will help him to understand the current trend, what people are looking for and much more.
- Blackmailing – I haven’t thought of this until few days back I read a tweet from a person who said if he is not able to make 200 followers by end of the day then he will commit suicide. And to my surprise he actually made it and thanked people for following him. (I tried my best to get the screen shot but was not able to get it. Please excuse me for this.) This technique is surely handy. Might think to use it if one fine day when I wake up and see that I have 0 followers. Lol (just kidding)

Not sure about blackmailing…but for me, twitter helps us stay connected with my co-workers that are in UK, US and lets know what they and we are doing…could be official and our personal lives too.
