Well the big boy in business networking has finally found its worth. So if you thought that after the massive 15 billion $ valuation for facebook.. Linkedin looked like a poor cousin? think again! Linkedin has raised a whopping 53 million $ in financing and finally broken the magic number of 1 billion $ in valuation.

 linkedin

Linkedin has been criticised to be a slow mover in the networking space. Though it has created quite a revenue centric business model with its subscriptions and jobs section which garner close to 100 Million in revenue for the site it has still not created the developer platform much like facebook which took its platform to another level.

According to Venturebeat linkedin could be looking at acquiring smaller players that add the ability of sharing to its network. Well the kind of players that I can think of is a pownce.com like application which could be very useful within a professional network like linkedin. The other one that is very much required is the opening up of groups platform within linked in and to make the same more viral and searchable.

Even India is very connected on linkedin as alexa statistics would show you that linkedin is ranked as the 144th most popular site in India (which is higher than its global rank of 191) contributing about 6.8% to the overall traffic on linkedin second only to the United States.  So I do expect some India specific applications/additions to linked in over time.

The above graph clearly shows that linkedin has got universal appeal and atleast the Indian audience seems to be ready for a business network. Though I still feel the Indian players like brijj and techtribe have missed a trick in using offline events to propagate online networking. If only they could have understood that the real USP of an Indian player is not to try and copy a linkedin but use the locational advantage as their USP.
