We have previously covered the rush to book .IN domains names and the number of .IN sites rising showing a trend of many Indian centric sites coming up. Now Verisign which manages .com, .net and .tv domain names has come out with a Domain Name Report that states a 26 percent increase in domain registrations in Q1 2008 over the same quarter of 2007.

Well if this is good news check the graph below that shows the domain registration activity in India which states that domain registrations has grown by 46% in Q1 of 2008 for India.

Besides for the above the  report also forecasts a bright future for internet in India.  Here is an excerpt from the report:

“India, with more than 41 million Internet users, ranks as the eighth largest Internet population in the world. Yet, with such a large population, this represents only about four percent of the Indian population. The number of Internet users is growing rapidly, 25 percent in the last year alone.6 As the number of Internet users continues to grow and Internet adoption increases, India is emerging as an increasingly important country for domain names.

At the end of the first quarter of 2008, there were 1.2 million domain name registrations in India across all of the TLDs. This represents a 46 percent growth over the previous year and a 12 percent growth over the previous quarter. Of these
registrations, approximately 685,000 are .com and .net domain name registrations and 410,000 are .in domain name registrations.

Internet users in India demonstrate a high awareness of both the .in and .com extensions, which are almost universally recalled by the respondents. In addition, recall for .net and .org are on the high side, with more than 80 percent of the respondents aware of the extensions.8 While the users recognize the domain name extension, there is less understanding of domain names themselves and the host of services that can be associated with a domain name.”

I know many people who book domain names and think that they have a killer business on hand. Just to quote an instance I had someone call me up the other day and say that “I have soandso.com booked and I think It can be a very big business!”. I wonder how these people behave like that? Though domain squatting is a big business and thats because spelling mistake have their benefits on the web but the other way round i.e. having a domain name doesn’t in anyway guarantee a good business. We so wish it was that simple though!

  1. Rajiv,
I am a domainer and have been registering generic names for years. (type-ins not typos)
Over the years the Domaining industry has changed and more and more domainers are developing a good business model based on their domains.
The best example in this space is Communicate.com ( now livecurrent.com), the owner of Perfume.com and Cricket.com
