iPhone

The most awaited iPhone is expected to launch in India very soon. The fan following for the new Apple iPhone is increasing by the day. Below is the map which shows the countries which are set to receive iPhone 3G.

Later on, I expect more countries to be added in the list. As the release date of iPhone in India is still uncertain I have decided to share few applications that you must have as soon as it releases.

1) AOL Radio – AOL Radio, when used with 3G, lets you tune into closest CBS station via GPS. This surely makes it a killer application. You can access AOL Radio by Edge or Wi-Fi.

2) VLC – VLC has always been one of my favorite PC multimedia applications. The simple reason being it allows me to listen/watch almost all formats of multimedia. Since many of you must be aware of the player, I won’t be talking much about it. VLC will now be available for iPhone too. You can get more info about VLC here.

3) Twitter for iPhone – It’s time to rejoice for all twitter fans (which also includes me). Twinkle, an iPhone Twitter client with “Locate Me” feature, is now available. So all twitter fanatics can now share with your buddies not just what you are up to but also where you are, at any point of time.

4) Google Reader – This is one feature that many of us use as it makes our life much easy. Now this killer application is now available on iPhone too.

5) YouTube – When you log on to the application you can see a list of featured videos similar to the parent site on the web. There is also a search feature, recently added list, most viewed and the usual stuff.

6) Digg – The official mobile version is yet to be released. But one thing is for sure as soon as it does we can see lot of people digging via their new iPhone.

7) iPhlickr – The next time you take a snap do not forget to upload it to your flickr account. As it removes the hassles of logging into your pc for uploading your pictures.

As per the old saying “Make hay while the sun shines.” I would suggest all of you to utilize these features and maximize your browsing experience with iPhone.

P.S. I have listed only few applications. Feel free to add others, that you think, should have been in the list.

  1. You have forgotten Winamp Remote … check this out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fi23xSxFcE&feature=related

  2. if companies can keep the price right then iphone 3g could swept the market from the likes of nokia….but if one looks at the fact that the 200$ iphone 3g in us is selling with fixed monthly payment of 35-50$ i doubt indian companies can bring the iphone cheaply to india……and in u.s its even being distributed free to users of high monthly payment…………

  3. @ Ashok - Thanks for sharing. :)
@ Raghav - In USA, Apple has already forced the other mobile players to up their game. Not only are future phones adopting more iPhone-centric interfaces and features, wireless carriers who can’t offer the iPhone to their customers are spending more to remind users of their offerings. The $200 pricepoint on the iPhone is going to be extremely tempting for everyone and this will be a matter of concern for other phone manufacturers. In India the scenario is different. It’s pretty hard to say that at what price iPhone would be available.

  4. Vinod Khosla (www.kpcb.com) has started iFund - a $100M initiative to fund startups and developers to make apps for iPhone - looks neat … I think it’s a wise move by Apple to open up their platform after such a long time … specially after iTunes (which is not only closed but also the most annoying User Experience in the hwole world) …

One reason why I like Vinod Khosla is his ability to see into the right kind of future and not follow the herd. So when the world was out, investing in social networks, he took interest in Bio fuels. And now, the iPhone applications. Khosla knows the market is big. It has to be, if iPhone sells 25% of all the smart phones in the U.S.
Opening up of platform to application is usually a wise move. And Apple sure has learnt it’s lesson. This could encourage a lot of people building startups around iPhone applications. Let’s just hope that we, the end user, do not end up with a Facebook(applications) like situation. Too much crap, too little usability.
