Updates From Apple: The 3G iPhone, Snow Leopard, The SDK and More

The iPhone 3G has been announced - combining all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK. In the US the new iPhone 3G is priced at a stunning $199 (Rs. 8000) for the 8GB model, and just $299 (Rs. 12,000) for the 16GB model.

It works on WiFi and Cellular networks so that’s a boon. The GPS for location based services is also quite exciting. Suddenly the package becomes as competitive as any other phone out there (and its much cheaper). Thankfully im not one of those people who stood for hours outside iStores or paid a bomb to get a piece that was beautiful but not perfect. The 3G iPhone looks, and is gorgeous – of course it still doesn’t have a keyboard but that’s about it. Processor speed is top notch, UI is as good as anything in the World, and all missing features have now been replaced. Consumers who were waiting to jump on to the Apple Bandwagon couldn’t have asked for more. Those who have bitten the forbidden fruit are unlikely to go away for some time.
Where will the competition come from?
The Google Android is expected to be much handier.
A possibly joint Sony Ericsson – HTC could also bring their strengths in technology and UI together to challenge the phone that just needs to create a little more hysteria to become one of the leading pop cultural icons of this generation.
The iPhone is coming to India by the ‘end of this year’. Rumour has it that Vodafone is launching it by the end of August. Airtel President and CEO Manoj Kohli is quoted by HT stating the device will available by mid-October. Expect some initial tug of war.
The iPhone SDK downloads meanwhile have topped 250k.
Another update for everyone using the Apple OSX – if you’re on Tiger, then be prepared to be set back 2 generations (the way technology changes, it has altered the meaning of ‘generation’). Leopard users will also need to update themselves. Apple has just previewed Mac OSX Snow Leopard to developers. A few exciting add – ons both on the hardware and software front. Snow Leopard is optimized for multi-core processors, taps into the vast computing power of graphic processing units (GPUs), enables breakthrough amounts of RAM and features a new, modern media platform with QuickTime X. Snow Leopard includes out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 and is scheduled to ship in about a year.

At times you wonder whether there is more hype here that deserved… Just to clarify, I love the iPhone, and an still dying to get my hands on one…
But this new version, looks largely the same… 3G, is something which other phones I believe already have had for a while now… Ditto for an SDK… So basically, this time, iPhone was trying to catch up on the functionality that was missed out last time…
this sent seems to be depicted in this cartoon

Interesting… IPhone for $199. Is it the market pricing pressure from their competition. BTW what is the status of some basic features like bluetooth, Sync etc. I somehow feel the iPhone will no longer remain an object of style statement if it is available for just Rs. 8000.
