A Possible Monetization Model for Twitter (for real) – and a Twitter Fund

Apple’s WWDC is on this week and I found something on Twitter which might hint at a monetization model in the future.

I just opened my Twitter page and found a message requesting me to see the coverage being summarized by their ‘pals’ at Summarize. I don’t know if this was paid (it probably wasn’t because it doesn’t say so).

I clicked the link. I trust Twitter. I’m sure many people did. Twitter could over time, build itself up in such a way that it becomes a ‘friend’ and then it can start tracking my behaviour and interests and guide me to events, websites etc. Nothing new or fancy or out of the blue but because people love and trust the platform so much, it can possibly capitalize by providing value with content.

Only Problem:

People access Twitter from their Phones, IM (well not IM for a few weeks now), Berries, Browsers and more. So there the message might not be displayed and it becomes ineffective.

Its servers cannot handle tweets. Will they be able to track behavioural analytics?

Twitter Fund:

Incidentally, because Twitter has been down, someone has decided to help it out and create a Twitter fund. Many people are questioning the Fund’s credibility but the author wants to keep it as transparent as possible.

Here’s his ideology:

Not bad considering a lot of people find a lot of value from Twitter. Twitter the brand should be really happy.

There has been talk for a while now about Plurk overtaking Twitter. Here’s a trend chart comparing the 2 in terms of search.

Plurk definitely has taken a spike up – having said that, search volume for Twitter is falling but that may not indicate much since people may no longer be feeling the need to search for Twitter because as stated above – its everywhere. It may not even show that signups are decreasing because people must be being invited and redirected. The only trend here is that Plurk has had a better start than Twitter. That may partly be due to the popularity of Twitter itself.
