The gaming freaks have had a hell of a time since the past couple of years. What with new consoles being launched in the past couple of years (Huh? Already forgot about Sony’s PS3, Nintendo’s Wii…) and a battery of new games introduced, it has been nothing less than a joy ride for these gamers. But my dear brethren, hold your breath! The party has just begun. This is because Indian mobile companies are gearing up to launch 3D mobile games in a huge way!!

The Indian mobile gaming market, it seems, is forecasted to exceed Rs 800 crores by 2010. And taking advantage of this fact are companies like Mauj Telecom and 7Seas Technologies who are gearing up to launch a bouquet of 3D mobile games. And if that’s not enough Hungama Mobile too is seriously considering entering this high-growth arena.

L Maruti Sanker, managing director of Hyderabad-based 7Seas Technologies says, “3D mobile games and multi-player games on mobile are going to be the next trend in India and Indian companies are working towards this by relating the games with Bollywood celebrities.”

If even this fails to suffice, sample this - In the pipeline are the Google Android and the N Gage phones with Wi-Fi capability! It surely can’t get better and bigger than this!!

But here’s a word of caution by Manish Malik, General Manager (gaming), Hungama Mobile. He feels that 3D games are limited by game size & the current market conditions and hence it will take a year or two before 3D really sets in.
Besides it has been realized that though mobile porting will be an evergreen business, it is a constraint for mobile game developers as different handsets have different issues.

However I feel that the mobile games business is going to experience an exponential growth in coming years. This is because it is estimated that by 2010, two-thirds of the human race will be using a mobile phone. In India, there are nearly 260 million mobile subscribers. There are 1,000-odd handsets that support 3D games and almost 400 handsets are launched every year. Hence I guess it shouldn’t come much as a surprise that the global mobile games business is pegged at $2.2 billion and the Indian mobile gaming market is forecast to exceed $193 million (over Rs 800 crores) by 2010!!

Clearly it looks like the good times are definitely not over for the Gaming fraternity.
