Email It!

Orkut developers seem to be on heavy duty mode, these days. First they come up with photo tagging and then within 2 days come up with another new feature, creating private communities on the basis of domain name email ids. The best part of this development is that Orkut has come finally come up with a revolutionary idea, something that has never been implemented in any of the private forums or communities all throughout the web (to the best of my knowledge).

 What am I talking about?

Till date, it’s always been the moderators and group owners who were supposed to manually approve members to hop onto the bandwagon. Now, it is possible to set up groups only for those who have email ids of the same domain name. For an example, if we, at WATBlog, decide to create an Orkut Community just for ourselves, all we need to do is create the group and allow only those who have …@watblog.com email addresses. It surely saves a lot of hassles for the community owner and moderators.

What more we need out of Orkut?

Owners and moderators should be allowed to add members having email addresses with more than one kind of domain names. For example, if we want a private community on Orkut, we should be able to add members having email ids with …@watblog.com, …@watconsult.com, …@watjob.com etc.

Also, alongwith pre-approved email id domains, Orkut should have provided option to add other members too who might not have the pre-approved email id domains.

How to create a “email validated” community on Orkut?

All you need to do is create a comunity as you would normally do.

While choosing the type of community, click on the “validated…” radio button, as shown above.

To the right, you should get an option to mention the domain name. Click on “add an email”.

When asked, enter you email address that belongs to the same domain name that you wish to approve.

You should receive an email asking for verification. Just click on the link provided, fill up rest of the details and the community is created.

By the way, if you notice the picture above, the red area marked with an arrow, you can also subscribe to customized news related to the community’s interests. I have a feeling, this comes up as an exclusive news on WATBlog.

What more information would you like from us?

    @ Aman…
Yes, I agree. Simplicity had always been the USP for Google and its products. It was simplicity that propelled Orkut to fame, so quick. I just hope Google learns to keep things cluttered even with loads of content.
