Mozilla Firefox is a free or an open source software, a mainstream of alternative web browsers to put it is gaining popularity due to its unique plug- ins and add-ons& also the stability its gives to the user. The usage of Internet Explorer  has been steadily declining as we cross the halfway through the year .Statistics show that , Mozilla has now reached approximately 18.41% ( as of May) from 17.76 & as of April , IE holds 73.75% of the market share confirming the steady decline of market share!

What stands Mozilla Firefox apart from Internet Explorer is the security it provides to the internet users getting rid of the spyware etc .which have caused a great deal of problems to the users, the faster loading of web pages, the tabs and last but not the least the pop – up blockers. And also there are a plethora of plug-ins and add-ons available for the fire-fox which have enhanced the usage of the internet over the years. Presently only 20% of the users use mozilla as the default web browser but this number is expected to grow rapidly in the coming months , also awaiting the response that it gets after the release of Firefox 3.

If you take the point of ‘tabs’ , I would also like to add that when you close the main window of the firefox it asks you whether you want to close all tabs or not , whereas in the case of IE , more precisely , IE-7 it closes all tabs at once and you have no chance of getting those pages again. Also if the mozilla firefox  after ‘not responding’ closes itself there is an option of restoring  the session  or to start a new session thus confirming its greater user interactivity. Now while I spoke about the advantages of Mozilla over browsers like the IE, let me switch to the other side . The Internet Explorer consumes less resources than the Mozilla Firefox which can verified by checking the system files and registeries. Also the IE uses less data transfer than the firefox. For an average ,everyday user ( by average I mean the one who uses internet to check his emails etc) IE is a decent browser.

What I would say is that the browser you select for a good internet surfing experience should depend On your daily usage and  the kind of usage ( heavy user or a moderate user) . I personally feel Firefox rules but I like IE as well! What do you feel?? Are you a IE fanatic or a firefox fan?

P.S. Heard of ‘Download Day 2008??’ Well, get Firefox 3 on the Download day and set the Guinness World record of maximum software downloads in 24 hours.

  1. I would prefer using the Opera browser. It’s more secure than firefox and ie. Go look at secunia.org

It also has all the features you mention in firefox. Infact most of them were Opera innovations that firefox borrowed.

It is also one of the leading activists in setting and defining Web standards, that help all web developers of the world.

It’s a pity they don’t get the support they deserve.

Oh, did you know that you can sync your bookmarks in your desktop browser with Opera Mini on your phone. Now that’s cool. :)

  2. I have been hooked on to Firefox ever since I got introduced to it 3 yeas back.. but off late it has been playing games that I don’t quite like.. especially the ver 3.0 RC2 has crashed more times than I can count… I feel the browser market will play an important role in the near future with players like flock (with its focus on social media) and others coming in.. browsers will soon target niche audience with specialized features… that’s what I feel personally..

  3. Maneesh, I agree that in the future specialized browser could/should be the future. I’m not sure there’s any money in it, but just like personalization in an app or website has gain dominance, a personalized browser make sense also.

With FF3rc2 crashing, could it be one of your addons? I switched to only using official releases because I’m addicted to Adblock, 1-Click Answers, and a couple other ones. They don’t always work until the official version is released (or a couple of months later).

Darish, I’m not an MS-basher but IE has the unfair advantage of being partially embedded in the OS, so there are somethings it will always do better. The same thing is true for Safari on the Mac (opens up 5 times quicker than Firefox, but it’s worth the wait ;-).

  4. should read: I agree that in the specialized browser could/should be the future.

  5. Mozilla firefox 3 is the way to go… its as light as feather and i m really impressed wit the speed @ which it loads GMAIL and other web 2.0 sites.. IE on the other hand sucks and Microsoft should stop usin bullyin tactics to enter from one market to another (remember how they destroyed hotmail and netscape)

  6. What sets mozilla apart are its add-ons. Though I have seen flock and have been quite impressed by it.
