Just yesterday, I was looking through Twitter and I found something interesting – Jarret Coon from Missouri has a twitter message, which says that “Im not going to bed till i have 4000 Followers …. click the follow button now or i may die .. you never know”

Though it seemed quirkily hilarious, it reminded me of the kind of penance undertaken by many people for social, religious matters. That is not to say that this can be compared to anything that was done by our political leaders.

The interesting thing is that Jarret did achieve his target. Quite an interesting strategy if this can have ingenuity with respect to content and be associated with a cause. Here the cause was relatively pointless – Jarret’s sleep. If the cause can be synergized across social media using multimedia content, then it can be quite interesting.

So you could have a YouTube Channel around the Cause. Also have a live streaming account on Yahoo! Live (this ensures that the ‘penance’ is visible and hence genuine). There can be a blog which allows users to donate using PayPal. The blog can update content. There can be a Twitter Page, a Pownce Page, A Facebook Group, an Orkut Community – and all this can be integrated into FriendFeed to have a birds eye view of the activities across social media.

Just a personal thought – I still don’t think these kinds of things will ever be as noteworthy as say Gandhiji’s fasts for example. Penance depends a lot on the person/ group of people. We have evolved technologically, but we have dwindled as human beings.
