HTC - Sony to Merge?

News Aggregation is definitely going social – Most bloggers who do news subscribe to RSS Feeds. That already is social. Twitter too is emerging as a source of news aggregation. Just picked up an interesting thread from Twitter which speculates about the rumour i.e. the HTC – Sony Merger.
Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC said in an interview that HTC would be a good fit in a merger with Sony Ericsson.
Both companies have different USP’s and bring different strengths to the table. HTC has a great UI but lacks on the applications front – they seem a little too formal. Sony Erricsson has great applications especially related to music. So there is a scope to join hands and provide more value to the market.
Sony Ericsson is currently 4th in the Word Market. Nokia takes the no.1 spot followed by Samsung and Motorola. Combining with HTC’s technologies, Sony Ericsson could become a potent force that can over take both Motorola and Samsung.
To give you an idea of Touch Phones – Apple sold 2.3 Million Phones last year giving it a .6% market share of the World Phone market (remember that they are regulated – they have walled gardens with operators). So can a Sony HTC partnership do better with respect to touch phones?
With respect to Smart Phones, HTC’s share of the market has dropped. It has been overtaken by both Motorola and Samsung in the Smart Phone category. So this partnership should help them create some great UI (which the Samsung Phones are famous for).

SE already has started to adopt devices made by HTC (Xperia series) and it might be a good move to merge…
thanks for the update
I guess I missed the official term used — “ODM” Original Device Manufacturer — So HTC is the ODM for SE Xperia and probably a few more models.
HTC had a great ODM business, it manufactured all O2, iMate and Dopod devices. And in recent years it went public with these products under its own brand name.
