Just watching the IPL Semi Final Between Chennai and Mohali and I noticed that the organisers of the event are starting to smartly integrate online models for their TV viewers. The latest being an application called Pulse Live.

Live Pulse not only updates the scores of the match online but it provides statistical coverage as well. The main hook being that the viewer is allowed to predict the result of the game as it flows. Along with that the viewer is also able to add predictions per over (and correspondingly win redeemable ‘points’). There are also questions related to things beyond the game. Eg. ‘Will Player X represent India?’

The interesting part is that Live Pulse is available only while the match is on. Quite an innovative strategy. The good part is that online contributions are used in commentary while the match is on. A good example of creating ‘User Generated Actions’ and increasing involvement with the game. They seem to be capitalizing on the fact that everyone in India has an opinion on Cricket.

This is the 1st time is saw Pulse Live. It may have launched slightly earlier but the problem still remains that the application came too late into the season. Having said that, it serves as a good base for future season and gives us hints of things to come.

My biggest problem with the application is that it has to be downloaded. It needs to be completely web based. Effectively this ensures that the application takes really long to load. Not the best strategy considering that broadband in India is not super fast. More time to load = lower engagement = not effective use of the application.

Promotion for PulseLive.com was being done during commentary. Integrating Online with Television has been a trend recently – the biggest event integrating TV with Online was the partnership between CNN and YouTube’s YouChoose Platform for the US Presidential Election Debate.

PulseLive is part of the Hawkeye Group. (And the Super Kings Have Just Won)
