Orkut Officially Introduces Themes
Email It!
The guys at TechBuzz logged in to Orkut yesterday to find themes. This is not a javascript hack or Orkut app and according to him, only a limited number of users have access to this feature. As of now, you can choose between four different themes. More will be on the way. I tried logging into Orkut, but I didn’t get the themes option so I guess he’s right there.

Have any of you been playing around with themes?
Orkut releasing themes at this point of time seems pretty lame considering places like Twitter and YouTube already allow users to create custom themes. Wonder why Orkut hasn’t just jumped into custom themes yet.

If you really look at it, Twitter is mostly used by the kind of crowd who are a bit “experienced” on the web scene. On the contrary, “chirkut” (orkut, of course) is almost a household term, these days. So, it does make sense for the Orkut team to come up with pre-designed theme. But, I guess, custom themes are also not far away.
Why do I have a feeling that one day Orkut is going to go the Hi5 way? Hi5 used to be a lovely networking site a few years back. Then they started jam packing the site with custom themes and dynamic backgrounds and what not. Look at Hi5 and most of it’s user profiles now. I’m sure you won’t feel like giving it a second visit.
Btw, did you guys notice the new Facebook-like search feature of Orkut? http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7940/orkutsearchad2.jpg
nice one! were you searching for me
- you just sent me a request!
Yeah I was, kinda. It was for the leads. But that was long back. So, chillax!
haha dont worry man!
@harshil - here is a workaround to enjoy and have a feel of orkut themes which orkut introduced in case your profile is not updated with this feature. You can enjoy all the 10 Themes even before orkut launches them (6 of them).
Secondly, orkut members who don’t have this feature as of now can have a feel of orkut themes.

I can see you’ve incorporated Greasemonkey scripts to create “themes” for orkut profiles. Must give it to you, your themes look pretty neat.
Being on similar lines, one can also incorporate Orkut themes on Firefox by installing the Stylish plugin and then installing these scripts for the same.
@shayon - if you check out the script source you’ll realize we have used the cascading style sheets (css) uploaded by orkut itself.
For instance
http://img3.orkut.com/skins/gen/beach001.css http://img3.orkut.com/skins/gen/country_side001.css http://img2.orkut.com/skins/gen/seasonal001.css
Thus, we have provided these themes which exactly you’ll enjoy once the feature updates in your respective profiles.
From various comments i received, I never knew stylish had a greater following as compared to greasemonkey. I’ll definitely have alternate links for stylish next time on.
Cheers!
@harshil - here is a security tip
the page on orkut you linked which claims to offer you orkut themes actually is a worm of sorts. If you run the scripts,
1 - all your friends will receive a scrap from you advertising that community without you knowing. To be exact, this text
“HEY..NEW IPL THEMES Released…! Its Simple To do This… Check this Community Description and enjoy - image hyper lined to community event link”
2 - you will automatically join these communities (community id’s) - 51874190,1463753,47266368,1492790,51873778,6854797,45971878,30329258,3465551,47321972,3465551
Damn! I hope this helped. Just couldn’t resist seeing the dangerous script.
@ orkutplus thanks for the tip off! Got it out of the way!

I myself ain’t too sure if I can say “Stylish” is more popular than “GreaseMonkey” but yeah, when you check out the Stylish stylesheets, you shall find styles available for GMonkey too. Thus, it’d be great if you too start providing SSheets for GMonkey too.
By the way, can I dare ask how you managed to get your hands on the official Orkut CSS files?
I want MAC theme
