Twitter Down

Entire last week people have been talking about Twitter being down and the reason behind it. Then we heard some strange news from the Twitter developer blog stating that Twitter was not designed as a messaging system. That had really put me into an enigma.

I also noticed that a post by Michael Arrington on Techcrunch which had a title “Twitter” and had no content but still had 267 comments (last time when I had checked). Many of the comments are very interesting and I couldn’t resist from sharing. One of the commenter said “Probably hit the publish button instead of save by mistake” while other one said “One of the best article I’ve read on TC. I mean WOW”. It appears that now Twitter can also make your post go down or may an actual depiction of what happens with Twitter. One of my friend thinks that it may be some kind of strategy by Mike that we couldn’t figure it out.

TechCrunch Post On Twitter

As many of the users have been frustrated with Twitter’s unexpected behavior lately they have been talking about switching over to other options. So what can these options be?

Pownce

1) Pownce – It is said to be a Twitter clone but has added functionality that Twitter lacks. Unlike Twitter it does not have 140 character limitations. Besides that user can share his pics, files and videos. Where as in Twitter one can only share the url. Pownce also allows you to add your other social profiles. This surely makes it Killer.

Jaiku

2) Jaiku – It is similar to Twitter and Pownce and also has the RSS option which keeps you updated. But unlike Pownce, Jaiku does not allow you to send message files to other users. But one of the drawbacks is that one requires to be invited to use it.

Friendfeed

3) Friendfeed – Just like Twitter users can post to their FriendFeed lifestream and in addition to importing RSS feeds and various content shared on other social networking site. Recently they have added a service called “rooms”, which functions like groups and restrict certain messages or items to a selected group of individuals.

These were some of the online substitutes for Twitter. Now let us talk about offline substitutes (these are just for fun) :

1) Party – You can party harder so that when Twitter is up again you have some thing to tweet about.

2) Phone – This one is for all men/women who love to speak. Call your friends or if they are busy than maybe an anonymous number and complain or chat with them about Twitter always being down. It can prove to be a great time pass until you can twitt again.

3) Work – Twitter at work may be injurious for your career so it is advisable that you better stop twitting start working.

In case I missed out anything please share it with me.

Update: Twitter Blog has responded to Techcrunch post in the same manner. Have a look

  1. how come these twitter guys having so much trouble with there site even though they have the resources…..looks like they want the audience to wait nd making up abt all those crashes……cos the more we wait and become anxious the more we use that product…..

  2. @ raghav – What u said is one of the reason that many bloggers have blogged and discussed. While the official twitter developer blog has given some other reasons. You can check them out here http://dev.twitter.com/2008/05/twittering-about-architecture.html

  3. It’s ironic to find TechCrunch with over 250 comments to a similar post whereas Twitter coming up with none (last I checked). Normally this is, kind of, piggyback marketing where one tries to cash in on others’ popularity. There are lot many sites out there that survive today just because another site exists. For example, today IPL is a out-n-out successful league and thus we can safely say that the IPL social networking site, that WATBlog has also written about, shall also get huge amount of hits, at least until IPL is on every one’s minds.

Anyway, all I’ll hope is that this time it’s actually TechCrunch cashing in on Twitter’s popularity and not vice versa else, may the Devil save Twitter.

  4. add http://www.kwippy.com to the list ;-)

  5. @ abhishek – thanks for the add :)
