I know that we are a bit late to blog about this but it is better than never. Back in March there was news that the Hollywood’s finest director of all time Mr. Steven Spielberg is set to launch a social networking site.

Steven Spielberg

So is this just another social networking site like Orkut or Facebook?

The answer is no. It is true that a social networking site is meant for people to socialize on the web. But this site focuses on those users who have or had or are interested in sharing paranormal and extraterrestrial experiences. And it may also have original video content investigating alleged ghost and UFO stories. That is yet to be confirmed.

What made Steven Spielberg open a social networking site?

There is a story that long time back Steven Spielberg had stayed in hotel Excelsior in the Jay Gould room and he might have seen a ghost which frightened him. He then took his entire staff out of the hotel in the middle of the night and drove to Marshall which was 20 miles away to stay in a Holiday Inn. And this proved to be the inspiration for producing the movie called Poltergeist. This was one of the reasons behind having the SNS. The other reason may be his love and passion towards aliens and ghosts. I mean he has made a lot of movies on those subjects which have been a huge hit. Few of them are ET, War of The Worlds, etc.

The next question that one might think of might be is he the sole owner?

The answer is no. The entire project is being created in partnership with Windsor Media, Terry Semel’s investment firm. Semel and Spielberg are old friends and hence this partnership makes a lot of sense to me.

Since the beginning there has been lot of rumors regarding the name of the SNS. Some time back the name was referred as “Ghosts” and now many claim it to be “Rising” or “The Rising.” To me this sounds like the name of a bollywood movie The Rising which revolved around the theme of Indian freedom fighter called Mangal Pandey. Coming back to Speilberg, I think that as Steven loves to thrill people in his movies he might have decided to carry it on even on the web space. This might be one of the reasons that he has not disclosed the name. For now all we can do is wait and watch.

The Rising

I wish that our Indian producers or directors do not come up with such idea. I mean imagine a social networking site by David Dhawan where everyone is just taking about Govinda and his funky dressing. Or worst Karan Johar’s social networking sites where just like onscreen he makes Shahrukh and Amitabh weep on the web and try to gain public sympathy.

Anyways here is a short synopsis on Steven Spielberg’s Life via Wikipedia:

Steven Allan Spielberg, (born December 18, 1946) is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. Spielberg is a three-time Academy Award winner and is the highest grossing filmmaker of all time; his films having made nearly $8 billion internationally. Forbes magazine places Spielberg’s net worth at $3 billion. As of 2006, the magazine Premiere listed him as the most powerful and influential figure in the motion picture industry. Time listed him as one of the 100 Greatest People of the Century. And at the end of the twentieth century, Life named him the most influential person of his generation.

In a career that spans almost four decades, Spielberg’s films have touched many themes and genres. During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, three of his films, Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park became the highest grossing films for their time. During his early years as a director, his sci-fi and adventure films were often seen as the archetype of modern Hollywood blockbuster film making. In later years, his movies began addressing such historical issues as the Holocaust, slavery, war, and terrorism.

I hope you all enjoyed it.
