There has been some buzz around Reliance launching Big Maps for a while now. This was reported sometime in November. We have some more information on Big Maps from sources that do not wish to be named.

A few facts:

The BigEntertainment team has been working on Big Maps for about 20 months now in the Mumbai Office.

Reliance has been laying OF Cables in India for a while now. This enables them to get GIS Data for all of India (well almost all of it). That effectively runs into Billions of Records. So they can effectively tell me what the Latitude and Longitude of my house is as well – read this post on LBS to figure out why that’s important.

The guys from the map unit report to the CTO (Nikhil Soman) for Big Entertainment (that might be a problem with respect to the UI for Big Maps because as we have seen with BigAdda – the functionality is not super). The entire industry knows however, that Nikhil is quite efficient (and also shrewd) – so expect something that’s handy.

Pahwa from CS wrote that 8 people are working on the Project. That’s not true. There are currently at least 300 – 400 people working on the project. Pahwa also said that BIG intends to launch the portal in 3 months (he wrote that in November – still waiting for the portal!) – apparently our source tells us that it will take atleast 2 years to make the product go live. The data of the magnitude that Reliance currently holds is difficult to manage.

All the data that they currently have is not grouped. Having said that – this is Reliance we are talking about. This is one of India’s biggest companies. I won’t be surprised if they double up their team and work double time to get the product out sooner than they expect. More on this as it comes.

  1. every1 is jumping to get a pie of local search cos they cant capture the global web search 4 sure……..i dont like companies focusing only on indian market now take it from the name bigadda..it was completely made 4 indians….why cant indian tech entrepreneurs make a product for a global audience either they r afraid or cant afford to loose vc’s………….now coming to bigmaps it also looks like a local cum gps navigation…though there is a huge scope.but there has been no player in the gps market who has shaken the market ……………now what would it take to make a good gps site …..well one should focus on locating rather than building it own maps….wat i really mean is maps can be taken from google earth or sum third party contractor now to ease navigation a company can have a team who go into a city nd locate each building nd then locate bank branches, shop…………this would be really helpful as people have to search for 30 minutes for a shop or atm..the reason for this is that it would take very less money as 1 can hire low wage workers for this job this information could again earn revenue as it could be sold to other local search player…now it could brew advertisement money too as it would be like when a person search for kotak vashi branch a popup opens nd tells him abt a sale in vashi nd the company can charge the advertiser…lets hope reliance has better thinker than this 19 year old guyyyy nd sorry for long mssg as i cant control myself talking abt business……cya :-))

  2. Guys, what happened to chintee.com ? reliance just creates buzz but nothing happens ?
BigFlicks name also changed to BigFlix

  3. valid point - which is why we’ve given them 2 long years to come up with Big Maps!! Thanks for the updates..

  4. wtf

  5. Hey Raghav..Get a life…why the hell should Indian Entre’s make products/services for Global audiences huh? We as Indians must be happy that Foreign VC’s and other Local VC’s are ready to invest and take India further. Their is no Q of being Afraid Mr. Raghav…get this right…yout think VC’s will invest blindly? Get your facts right first. VC’s will invest only on a concrete base and in-depth analysis of the market with many parameters and vertical growth scope. So stop your rubbish and random thoughts.

  6. @Pankaj…Any Business or Entreprise cant be build overnight. You cant expect for start ups or any new entry verticals churning Millions in months. Anything needs time and patience. Maximum time limit is 10 years. But with stringent plans you can build a company within 5 yrs max. Take any case scenario- Infosys, Wipro or even Reliance to have grown over the years. So dont think like a Kid.
