Naukri.com’s much awaited education portal shiksha.com has just been launched. And the portal first impression (based on design and UI) isn’t impressive at all. Shiksha.com is surely NOT eyecandy and already has google ads on the homepage content pages! My question is.. Is it really required? Given that naukri has enough money to support this site till its good to make decent revenue?

 shiksha

Well lets leave the UI and design aside and look at the features and content because thats what will get users coming back to the site.

Shiksha.com has the following features:

1) Groups (like yahoo/google/orkut groups)

2) QNA ( Much like rediff QnA And Yahoo Answers)

3) StudyAbroad (which has university listing) - The good feature here is one can sms oneself information on universities and can also express interest in joining a university or confirm whether on is still studying in that university or is an alumni of the university. The reason this is a good feature because it helps people connected with one university whether future, present or past network with each other.

4)  Test Prep (This has all the coaching class information for preparing for various entrance examinations)

 5) Career (This has career centri institutes and course information. For example animation, architecture courses etc)

The good thing about shiksha is that its content is well integrated with the features i.e. if you are browsing a college or a course it asks you whether you have any query (QnA) or would like to join the groups for further discussion(Group). Another good feature for registered users is alerts. All the other content is free to access. So I feel registration wont be rampant on Shiksha. Just recently in.com had launched where even the content access was limited to registered users. Given the fact that educational information is highly need based may be Naukri should have thought about this strategy rather than having deceptive google ads. (Check shiksha.com out. You cant make the difference between site content and google ads!)

In recent times we have seen many education/study abroad oriented community sites like bharatstudent.com, uniguru.com along with the old war horses like pagalguy.com and coolavenues.com which have been around for sometime. This entry by naukri does put a lot of value to this educational content segment and it will be interesting to see how naukri goes about promoting it.

All in all id rate shiksha the following:

Design/UI - 4/10

Content - 8/10

Features  - 7/10

  1. Where did you see google ads on home page of shiksha.com? As I did not see any? The section on the bottom of the page is powered by shiksha only.

The content is really impressive and features wise it’s a good mash up. A complete 360 degree approach.

Good work by Info Edge. Keep it up.

  2. Thanks for pointing out.. Have corrected that error… But none the less all pages have google ads and its quite deceptive as well. Bad strategy if you ask me.

  3. Info Edge is making money only through naukri. The other businesses are still not doing great. But there strategy is good, they will do well in long run.

And I don’t agree with you on certain points…. I liked the site as whole. Site is colorful and bright, gives me a very youthful feeling. About google ads, it’s core business and I think Sanjeev knows it better than anybody else in the industry. I am a big fan of SB. It’s a good first step.

  4. The site is confusing and I could not figure out lot of things. To me it looks like yellow pages i.e. no comprehensive/fresh information but just pointers. As a jobless person it adds no value to me (I am 22 yrs and an engineer). The site’s technology is better then other forum based portals like pagalguy.com. BTW, I am fan of HelloChampion.com but they need to market the site well.

  5. Why somebody will just browse crappy listings? Like the first one is JetKing Computers in Delhi? Anybody can claim anything…online!! The value chain is not strong and the focus is diluted to alumni groups, Question and Answers, Coaching and Foreign education. Can Amit/Navita explain, what is your key takeaway (just one) from the portal (shiksha). based on post above I visited htpp://www.hellochampion.com - it looks useful. Even CBSEGuess.com and ExtraMarks.com offers targeted features for their audience. I see Shiksha is new avatar of IndiaEducation.Net in a new ajaxified skin - I stress it will take 2-3 years for them to make it right as they stated that they will spend $5-$10 millions. They should acquire some portals and plug shiksha to it.

  6. I think http://qna.educouncil.org/ is far better than shiksha.com because experts answered my question immediately.

  7. I’m father of 10th class student. We were in search of old question papers and other educational content and found http://QuestionPaper.in very helpful. They offer previous and model question papers and educational content for various entrance exams as well. I like online test series available on this website for IIT JEE and AIEEE
