In.com is Web18′s Horizontal Portal (“In.com” supposedly cost them 2 crores!)

We had blogged about the impending launch of Web18′s horizontal portal yesterday and now Its already been launched (thanks to anand and dinesh our readers for commenting and letting us know)

Its a two alphabet domain and one of our readers commented that it cost them 2 crores! I wont be surprised if that was the case in reality. So is the 2 crore worth it for such a domain?

Well yes! if you look at what Web18 has done with In.com. I logged in with the test username and password (which is “test” for both) and was let impressed by what I saw.

in.com

Uncluttered Homepage

Firstly what hits you about In.com is its uncluttered design. Have a look at the screen shot below.

In.com is Web18’s Horizontal Portal (”In.com” supposedly cost them 2 crores!)

In.com Offers News, Music, Videos, Games, Classifieds, Travel & Mail

Now as you log in you can choose whether you want to log in to read(the news has a digg.com like interface), read mail, play games, find flights, matrimonials, products or listen to music, podcasts or just watch videos.

The beauty of it all is that its very well presented (Great UI) and its refreshingly different from the other portals. Check screenshot below.

In.com is Web18’s Horizontal Portal (”In.com” supposedly cost them 2 crores!)

The good or bad part about In.com is that you need to login to access any information even news. Which might be a good ploy given that registered users would show more engagement that non registered. But it will also keep the number of users low. In.com does seem like a next generation portal and can be easily classified as the next level for horizontal portals.

It will be interesting to see how the old war horses like rediff, indiatimes and sify react to this new entrant. Also it will be interesting to see in what manner and scale is in.com promoted by Web18.

PS: Incase you want to give In.com a spin just login with the username: test and password: test. Do let us know what you think! (Thanks to informationmadness.com for discovering this. Though the password isn’t working anymore.)

2 crores is a very good price for that domain. An excellent grab

I think its a little too pre-mature to speak on the look of the website as I could not find ads anywhere. And we cannot ignore the fact that ads are a must for any website to run profitably.

Nonetheless, the look of the website is fresh & I look forward to its launch.

It is definitely going to get cluttered once ads are put up…

We cannot call it a break-through (first) website unless it promises the users to show no ads at all on its homepage!

It does have ads when you log into your account. Just ads dont clutter the user experience its the way the content is presented. In this case a call has been taken to have logged in users only access all features which is a refreshing change. Also it gives Web18 better opportunity to track user behaviour and provide better experience when they log in the next time.

i found some more easter eggs across the site. looks like they have purposely left clues and hints for things to come, I found a page that had search for jobs, cars , houses, local listings, the list goes on. the same page also had sections for chatting, planning, blogging, publishing. a lot of the links were not working but i did find stuff like a financial planner. This baby looks huge.

    @sane man:

    Only time will tell buddy.

BTW, Web 18 is still losing money. It is investing heavily in internet portals, which according to me is risky as yet another tech bubble seems to close.

    What say?
