YouTube introduces ‘Buzz Targeting’

‘Buzz Targeting’ is a product by Google that uses an algorithm to find videos that are likely to ‘Go Viral’. Videos could go viral due to a variety of means such as email, IM, bookmarking, social networks, blogs etc – due to the ‘transportable’ nature of YouTube’s videos.

So it’s not clear if the ‘Buzz Targeting’ algorithm will ‘sense’ popularity by examining the viral nature of videos all over the internet or otherwise. YouTube is one of Google’s revenue related disappointments and it is desperately looking at overturning the UGC portal’s fortunes.

YouTube has tied up with ‘partners’ – most of these are channel partners with high subscription rates (dint see too many Indians on that list) If YouTube senses that videos will go viral, ads will be overlaid on the bottom fifth of viral videos supplied by these ‘partners’ who will share ad revenues with Google.

Recently by launching Youtube.in, YouTube has unleashed the power of geo – targeted ads for Indian Advertisers making the platform more attractive for placements. With ‘Buzz – Targeting’ too, advertisers will be able to choose interest related categories and the like.

A smart move, placing ads on things that people ‘want’ to see. I just hope it doesn’t make videos less viral due to audiences being skeptical. The programme is restricted only to people who ‘own the copyrights’ to their material.
