The TRAI put forward a consultation paper yesterday, which sought the views of industry experts on issues like permitting the internet service providers (ISPs) to have interconnection with landline and mobile telephones to provide internet telephony within the country.

Currently, ISP’s are not allowed to link landline and mobile phones to the Internet thereby providing Internet Based Telephony powered by VoIP across India. PC – PC calling however is free. Some players such as Geodesic have played around with these loopholes and launched phones that connect directly to the Internet to offer VoIP based services.

If the Internet Telephony Regime is indeed liberalized then one will see cheaper call rates across the country for calling within the country and for calling to International destinations as well.

The US has seen prices of International Calls drop by huge margins since the liberalization of International Telephony. Only a couple of years back, calls to India from the US were at 50 cents per minute. That figure now stands at 5 cents per minute. We have always maintained that over time voice will become virtually free.
