21 TV Channels on Mobile Courtesy MTNL

We hypothesized about Mobile TV for a while. We have also dwelled about Mobisodes and Video ‘snacking’. While we were doing that – Mobile TV via MTNL was quietly launched in Delhi.

I think this service will now open up to the other markets that MTNL operates in. Business Standard has reported this story but hasn’t stressed on where the service will be available. So my calculated guess is as good as yours.

“We have tied up with a technology partner, who is carrying out the field trials. We would provide 21 channels,” MTNL Executive Director J Gopal said.

I guess the same rules that were stated at the launch of the service in Delhi apply – The handsets must be compatible with the Symbian operating system, the phones must have at least 2MB of memory and have the Real Player application.

No word out on the price yet but we think the package will still be 5 channels at Rs. 50 a month with an extra fee for subsequent additions.

Anyone used the service in Delhi yet?

  1. This service will available from June-08 to MTNL Mumbai’s Dolphin and Trump Mobile subscriber,The possible price of MTNL MOBILE TV will Rs.49 per month for five channels and Rs.99 per month for 25 channels of Unlimited Acess.

  2. I wonder how effective mobile advertising will be on these Mobile TV channels? Are these the normal Star,Sony channels we get or separate production houses?
Also, the articles state that their would be a 4 minute lag compared to the normal Live television.
