Unofficial Twitter Blacklist: Question On Genuineness!
Twitter is indeed a handy social media tool. I have also mentioned in my last post about different ways people use Twitter (some people also think that Twitter is about getting laid with middle age women). Though Twitter is gaining more and more popularity every day. It is also becoming more and more spammy. And one needs to ban those spammers to make the Twitt world more healthy and friendly. Today morning I read an article on TechCrunch about Twitter Blacklist by an unofficial site.
So far the site has reported 379 spammers and obnoxious people/ids. Some of them are BarackObama4, bibleanswers, Saawariya and many more. For now it does not have a search option. A search option can be more handy as it can help users to know about the users who send them request to follow.
Besides that I do not find the list to be 100% geniune. They have reported Saawariya as a spammer or maybe an obnoxious id what ever. But the fact is that the official twitter blog has said that they have started India short code 5566511 after noticing Saawariya tweeting. So if it was suppose to be a spammer why would Twitter mention about it in its blog?
Only question comes to my mind is that how authentic is the list? Or is it another gimmick to gain more traffic to that site?
Anyways we need an official blacklist to identify and block the spammers and twitter has an official blacklist. However it is not clear how you get on it, but perhaps if you are blocked by enough members you get inducted.

Rushabh, an interesting insight.
I didn’t expect a “blacklist” from Twitter.
Let’s see how the users respond to this.
how is twitter supposed to come up with gimmicks for traffic when the site itself does not generate content on its own?
it’s completely a user generated site so it cannot be a GIMMICK in any case to attract traffic..
I think twitter had to do what it’s doing.. block spammers so it can keep twitter CLEAN..
Blocking spammers a gimmick for attracting traffic? are you kidding me!!! so what should twitter do to avoid becoming another junkyard like orkut? not block spammers, LOL!
The post though insightful requires the necessary correction. The author of this posts must write sensibly.
TwitBlackList - These guys are the biggest spammers in Twitterverse.
When did “following” become spam?
These guys are shamelessly soliciting followers for their site. Did you look at the big “Donate” button?
If you understand Twitter you’ll now fall for spamsters like TwitBlacklist. Beware of those spammers!
@Ronak,
Please read the post again completely with full attention to get the point. Anyways, for your help I am highlighting some excerpts from the post:-
1. …is it another gimmick to gain more traffic to that site?
2. …we need an official blacklist to identify and block the spammers and twitter has an official blacklist…
@Rupesh & @Muthu
I agree, the site twitterblacklist seems to be fake and does not show up genuine results.
I really liked twitter coming up with a twitter blacklist. What has to be seen is the factors that influence their decision to blacklist people on twitter.
@Ronak Shah,
I don’t agree with the whole black list? Why would you need them?
You can always unfollow / block etc., on your own. Why would you need someone else tell who you should be following or not?
Twitter design automatically takes care of spam. And that’s the reason they don’t bother with blacklists etc., since Twitter dudes understand spamming is simply not possible in Twitter.
@muthu
yeah.. you are right.. but there will be people who will using twitter to advertise their products and services or even sell VIAGRA..
now that will make the whole twitterspace like a junkyard..
Also, people will start realizing that they can’t just spam anyone or talk shit on twitter because of twitter’s own “spammer list”.
I think it will discourage the spammers from using twitter because of the official blacklist that twitter has come out with..
I certainly think it’s a good move, not a gimmick at all in case you think so.
Imagine people abusing this service with all those viagra links every now and then, would you feel comfortable with all that?
@ Muthu
I agree about not needing the blacklist. One doesnt need to refer to a list to determine if someone is a spammer or not, thats just personal opinion. Like with the case of saawariya, some thought it was cool to have updates on the movie, while others thought it was absolute spam.
muthu, you say “spamming is simply not possible in Twitter”…am curious…can you elaborate on why its not possible?
@Vivke Hegde
Spamming is not possible, since you have the option of blocking that particular user. And you need to follow him in the first place to get his messages.
I might be wrong, may be people are getting spammed even if you block them.
@Ronak Shah
We can of course unfollow / block the spammer, if you think the user is spamming you.
Twitter will be used by different kinds of people. Policing is not a good idea.
@muthu
well true that we can block the spammer.
However, the spammer would still have an opportunity to follow other people and even spam them. The twitter blacklist is to close-out the opportunity for spammers. In simple words, it is to discourage spamming and encourage quality/ad-free conversation on twitter.
And of course, a spammer can open multiple twitter accounts and you can’t stop that person completely. So, if twitter has a blacklist, it will help clean the junk out of twitter.
@Ronak Shah
How would the spammer spam other people if they block them? If you look at twitblacklist he has listed everyone as a spammer with some funny algorithm that he wrote!
I simply say I’m smart enough to figure out who the spammer is or not. I don’t need some stupid tool telling me who to follow, block etc.,
And on top of it twitblacklist spammer @hex is begging for money on his website with a “Donate” button. If he’s not the spammer, I’m not sure who is.
@muthu
if you block them doesn’t mean that the spammer won’t find anyone else to spam!!
The step taken by twitter is to eliminate “spammers”.
You’re right that you have the freedom to decide who you wish to follow and who you don’t but that freedom can be abused by spammers as many people on twitter follow back and who know’s you could be following back a spammer as well who is selling VIAGRA who you even don’t know!!! LOL!
I don’t agree with any UNOFFICIAL BLACKLIST.
I think we have had a conference call here so that’s it for the day! It was really nice talking to you here.
