Bharti has joined a global consortium to build a $700-million undersea cable system (it’s sixth) that will cut through 13 countries and link India to Britain as reported by AP.

The cable will carry commercial traffic by the second quarter of 2010.

Mr David Nishball, President, Enterprise Services, Bharti Airtel Ltd, was quoted as saying “There is a tremendous rise in use of data and broadband applications among enterprises and consumers globally, and India is no exception. Bharti now has enough capacity to take care of our consumer bandwidth requirements till 2015.”

That seems strange because Jim Cicconi, vice-president of legislative affairs for AT and T has warned that the Internet will reach full capacity by 2010 and atleast $55 billion worth of investment was needed in new infrastructure in the next three years in the US alone, with the figure rising to $130 billion to improve the network worldwide.

Recently we have seen increasing volumes of video and user-generated content being uploaded as a result of which infrastructure companies have had to make a large number of investments.

Airtel is the only Indian service provider to be a part of this new consortium, and will be operating the cable landing station in Mumbai. The other partners are AT&T, BT, C&W, Djibouti Telecom, Gibtelecom, Libyan Telecom, MTN Group, Omantel, Saudi Telecom Company, Telecom Egypt, Telkom SA and Verizon Business.

In other news related to Bhrati, which has expressed an interest in taking over South African Telecom Operator – MTN, it has been learned that MTN has set terms for the deal with Bharti to go through.
