Last week it was reported that YouTube’s India Portal was going to launch on May 7, well it has happened. India is now the 20th Country to have a specific domain. This helps because when Indian users go on to YouTube, the portal is able to detect so and it then feeds these users with only ‘Indian’ Promoted Videos. A classic case of segmentation, which will drive more advertisers to sign up on YouTube’s advertising platform.

Youtube.in is now live. It has a host broadcast partners (who are showcasing ‘Promoted Videos’ such as Yash Raj Films, Rajshri Media, Eros, Kamala Bhatt [KamlaBhattShow], Zoom, NDTV, India TV, UTV, and the Bennet Coleman & Co.)

Incidentally most of these ‘partners’ existed way before the India Channel was launched.

I found something hilarious on Indiatimes. - “All uploaded content on YouTube is protected by its digital hash technology for copyright protection. This technology makes it very difficult for someone to copy and reload the same content, thus curbing piracy, said YouTube International Manager Sakina Arsiwala.”

This is probably one of the funniest things I have heard in a while. In the picture below, you can see what comes up in Google when you type “youtube video downloads”

If that’s not enough then you can check out this video which I found on YouTube itself!

YouTube has a video on its Indian Site and main site titled “Welcome to India YouTube”

The video reminds me of our WATShow intro.

  1. To add more, you can read the interesting email conversation between me & Youtube help & support regarding Youtube video downloads:-

  2. Great stuff guys.
    congratulations. t
    it’s time for youtube.ch (switzerland)

  3. Dude, Probably they were referring to the Anti piracy tool that YouTube has… This works on video fingerprinting!

  4. Still doesn’t matter does it - you can still rip stuff off YouTube and sell it on a CD for all i care. Piracy doesn’t only exist within the domain of YouTube :P - Their anti piracy tool only matched videos that have been uploaded on YouTube right? As long as they aren’t uploaded you could still engage in all the piracy you want!

  5. After reading through the interview at Indiatimes again i get the feeling the particular comment was to Highlight Piracy withing YouTube (as you mentioned), as in someone copying a video from Youtube and uploading it again on youtube under his name /channel..

also protection using the fingerprinting technology .. if for original content generators ..

As for piracy .. comeon .. the quality of these downloaded video is bad.. (the video quality on YouTube is as it is bad…)

So if YouTube says their content is difficult to reuse and copy .. probably they know that the quality is the reason … lol

  6. @ANkur,
FYI, Youtube now provides two video quality to watch the video - 1) low & 2) high. Even, when you try downloading from these sites they offer you in two formats.

Basically, when you upload a video file to youtube, the raw file is processed into 2 file formats - 1) .flv(low) & 2) .mp4(high quality).

But, if you have copied some others’ video & uploaded the .flv file directly, it doesn’t show the high quality option.

In that way also you can notice whether the file is original or copied from anyone else.

  7. as far as curbing piracy or copying of youtube video goes …i can say 1 thing that unless n until utube disables its cache system for videos it wud be impossible to curb it……nd they plan to even pay video publishers in future so imagine 1 copying anothers video nd publishing it again making a hell lot of moolah………another way of curbing is to put digital signatories in video itself but then who wud like to fight the system to claim the ownership…….

  8. yea i doubt digital signatories is a solution - that can be worked around with. Rehashing from youtube is something we have to deal with
