Why Did I Get That Ad? Ask Yahoo.
Email It!
OK fine. Frankly, I get pissed off when people (websites, yaar) serve me car loans ads for a BMW when I do not even have money to buy a Bajaj Pulsar. (What I do with all my salary, is another question altogether). At times, I so wanna ask these ad-networks, what do you see in my profile that suggests that it’s ok for you to prompt me to go and buy an eight-cylinder, 3000 CC sedan? That, however, is not an option. Not anymore.
This news piece says, Yahoo is planning to let the end users know their ad profile. What
this means is, that you will be able to right-click on an ad and find what exactly in your profile has prompted Yahoo to deliver that ad of the matrimony website (with the picture of the same beautiful girl that you have seen on three other advertisements), into your inbox.
Well, at least that’s the vision of Jeff Weiner, executive vice president of Yahoo’s Network Division, which means he’s in charge of groups like entertainment, search, and news.
“I could envision an icon that appears when you see an ad, and if you were to click through that icon, you would see the data we’re leveraging…If we’ve got it wrong, you can tell us or you could turn it off,”
Turn it off. Aaahhh. That’s sounds good!
Jeff Weiner was addressing the Economics of Social Media conference. Earlier, at the conference, Toni Schneider, the CEO of Automattic, creator of Wordpress had said that while he was working in Yahoo, he saw a system that allowed Yahoo employee to see the data that allowed Yahoo to deliver a targeted ad to a user. Schneider said he had suggested then that the system be made available to the users, but Yahoo shot down the idea.
“They were appalled,” were his exact words.
