Josh18, a part of Web18 has announced the launch of ‘Live Cricket Scorecards’. The only difference is that these scores will be showcased in Hindi.

There obviously is a huge market for such a service in India as we have observed over the last few months. A lot of companies such as Yahoo (with regional language maps and walking directions), MGinger (with SMS)  NDTV, and Business Standard (both Hindi portals) have introduced initiatives in Local Languages in the last few months. The presence of such players despite the Internet in India not yet being proliferated as a mass medium is a hint with respect to what lies ahead.

A Mobile GPRS Service with a similar offering is probably on its way as well with more Indians accessing the Internet using GPRS.

On another note anything that’s culturally relevant and has an overtone of cricket probably is one of the best strategies for success in India.

Commenting on the new initiative, Mr. Neeraj Sanan, Marketing Head, Web18 said, “There has been a consistent feedback from the users requesting for cricket coverage in Hindi. In the offline world, various Hindi publications fill the void but on internet there is no source available where users can get to know the latest about cricket in their own language. We have big plans for cricket on Josh18; Hindi scorecard is just the beginning and users can expect much more in coming months”.

Unfortunately one probably won’t see the Live Scorecards of the IPL on Josh18. The exclusive rights of which have been given to Live Current Media for $50 Million.

The portal already registers more than 5 lakh page views per day and this initiative is expected to bring in more than 45,000 unique visitors during match days.

  1. The claim made in the story is false. Josh 18 is not the first news site to provide hindi scorecards. Dainik Jagran’s news website http://www.jagran.com had been providing cricket scorecards in hindi from the time when leave aside Josh 18, even Web 18 was not conceived and none of the current channels or forays of network 18 (previously TV 18) had come into existence. It was during the end of the last century. And Jagran is not a regional outfit. It is the most read newspaper in the country across all languages and Jagran’s website has been the most viewed hindi news website all along. Even in its current avtaar of a co-branded website Jagran.Yahoo.com has just the double page views and more than double unique users than what Josh 18 has claimed and we are still providing the Hindi scorecard. And mind it that this co-branded site too came into existence well before Josh 18 last year.
