eBay to sell Skype?

Here’s a quotation that eBay’s CEO – John Donahoe gave to the Financial Times. “What we’re testing this year are the synergies … If the synergies are strong, we’ll keep it in our portfolio. If not, we’ll reassess it.”

This indicates that eBay may be looking to sell Skype.

Skype was purchased by eBay 3 years ago in the hope that it will help eBay sell products more effectively. That unfortunately hasn’t happened.

It’s unlikely that anything great will happen to eBay’s synergy with Skype in the next 8 months so a sale is definitely on the cards.

Skype is one of those innovations which becomes extremely difficult to:

a) Monetize because of low revenues over time.

b) Typecast for A particular use.
