CricInfo Launches Mobicast for the iPhone

A few months back we had announced that Cricinfo has launched live ‘mobicasts’ i.e. ball-by-ball update and scorecard service for Internet/GPRS enabled mobile phones.

ESPN owned Cricinfo, announced the launch of Cricinfo Mobicast for Apple’s iPhone today.

Mobicast is the first full-fledged cricket widget for iPhone.

iPhone users will now have access to Cricinfo’s famous, live, ball-by-ball updates, scorecard, match schedules, news, photos as well as podcasts from experts such as Ian Chappell, Tony Greig and Geoff Boycott.  The Mobicast widget will automatically update, eliminating the need for constant web page refreshes and long waits.

This application, like the one we announced earlier is also in association with (US Based) Plusmo, as a free service, (standard data charges applicable, based on your carrier’s rate plan). The Cricinfo Mobicast Widget can be accessed at http://ci.plusmo.com

Anil Nayar of Cricinfo was quoted as saying “It is important for us to extend our service into as many areas as we can, and be as accessible as possible to a global cricket audience. Our news, scores and features content are now available across all major digital channels and via mobile on all major mobile device platforms.”

With all the buzz surrounding the apparent launch of the iPhone in India, this seems like a good opportunity for Cricinfo to capitalize on. It’s not clear however whether this widget is for the Indian Market (preparing for the iPhone to come here?) or whether it’s for the international market.

Co – incidentally the IPL beings today as well and Live Current Media has bagged the title of Official Online Portal. That effectively means that according to the current regulations, players like Cricinfo are not able to access IPL Content.

Any bets on Bangalore vs Kolkatta? My money’s on Ganguly’s men.
