Live Current Media Bags the IPL Portal Rights for $50 Million
Email It!
This comes in via Pahwa from CS. Live Current Media Inc, a Vancouver, Canada based company has bagged the portal rights of the Indian Premier League for 10 years for $50 million (Rs. 200 Cr.)
The owners apparently paid Rs. 400 Cr. for a 10-year franchise so this sounds like a reasonable deal. The only concern is, with an internet population that is miniscule and cricket being perceived as a sport which is to be viewed via the television, will the company be able to justify an average outflow of $5 Million a year.
According to CS, LCM owns the domain Cricket.com, and intends to develop it as a portal around the IPL. An Indian company may also be involved with the portal.
Live Streaming Rights are being sold separately to Willow TV.
LCM seems to be looking at the online space with respect to cricket in a big way. Pahwa says that they recently bought a fantasy cricket application for $25, 000.
Again I reiterate – cricket in India is perceived so far as a TV sport. Most sport for that matter (around the world).

They also own the domain names T20.com, IPLT20.com, IPLTwenty20.com, IndianPremierLeague.com!
Crazy stuff!
I should sell them IndianPremierLeagueT20.com and WorldCupTwenty20.com
But 50 million is absolutely insane!
Oh ya…..am flirting with IPL2008.com
haha you’re crazy man! You own one of the above domains? IPL2008 would sort of loose its charm in 44 days wouldnt it?
IPL will lose its charm on me in 44 days!
Plus 44 days is more than enough to make an impact…
