Fropper.com gives India a taste of Music Networking

In a country known for its rich musical tradition, can music networking be far behind? Fropper.com has recently launched an online music service that will enable more than 3.5 million users of Fropper.com to listen to their favourite songs as they exchange notes with other music lovers on the site. ‘Fropper Music’ will be a unique space for users to connect and network with other Fropper users in real-time.
Fropper.com will provide users with a host of pre-determined music channels across five languages, including stations like Hindi Latest, Punjabi/Bhangra, Marathi, Telugu and International Hits. Along with these channels, Fropper Music will facilitate discovery and discussion around music. Fropper Music will also provide users with a unique way of creating their own customized music channel which will play songs on the basis of a user’s taste across genres. Users will be able to intuitively undertake ratings, discuss & share their musical tastes and preferences. Their activity will feed into the social graph of other friends, networks & users and, in turn, ignite interaction around music on Fropper.com.
The use of the words ‘social graph’ makes me wonder – is Fropper going the Facebook way? It’s almost like the iLike application on Facebook. So this seems like a slightly different approach to social networking – applications within a walled garden without opening up the API’s. So essentially you could have only successful applications within your network available to users rather than the flood of applications that users on Facebook have. This leverages the value per application.
Mr. Navin Mittal, Business Head, Fropper.com says, “Networking around music is a fairly new concept in India & there is no quality music networking site yet. Internationally, Internet radio is gaining more listeners with every passing day and has already left terrestrial radio far behind in terms of growth. On Fropper Music people will be able to enjoy music on the basis of genre, ratings, social slices, popularity, moods & also build custom channels. Intelligence will be built into the system to enable discovery & interaction.”
The concept of Networking is new in India, internationally its very well known. So Fropper has obviously modified an international concept to an Indian network.
Minglebox had a music service similar to the one employed by Fropper. It shut down however because apparently they were sued.
The advantage that Fropper Music has is that the Music on the site is completely legal. Fropper.com has secured the required licenses from both PPL and IPRS to stream music from the website. Additionally, they are also exploring options of sourcing more content through various labels and music licensing bodies to give users maximum choice and range of the best music available in the market today.
Fropper Music has an initial song base of more than 15,000 songs sourced through labels like Venus, Saregama and Tips amongst others. Fropper has plans of expanding its song base to over 100000 songs in the next 3 months and is also set to launch many new channels in addition to those that are currently available. Regional content for the site has been sourced through top labels like Aditya Music, Krunal Music and Sagarika Audio to name a few.
