CERN Lab

19 years after Tim Berner Lee at CERN created the Internet, another innovation is in the making there that could once again completely revolutionize the way we access the information. CERN has been. Working on Grid Computing, CERN, the particle physics laboratory has tested speeds which are around 10,000 times the broadband speeds of today. The new Internet has the ability to deliver mammoth amount of data within seconds.

David Britton who is a professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies “could revolutionize society”.

“With this kind of computing power , future generations can collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,”

As with almost all major computing milestones, work on GRID computing started inCERN LabCERN when it realized that the titanic amount of data – around 56m CDs – will be generated by its new Large Hadron Collider (LHC), its new particle accelerator built to investigate the origin of the Universe. The grid at CERN will go live from the day the LHC is turned ON, to capture the data that it will generate.

Faster speeds are always welcome. However, this initiative by CERN is not the same. The older Internet is still largely based on the telephony network. Those systems were not designed for data. The newer system is almost completely made up of Fibre Optic cables and ultra-modern routing equipments and is highly optimized for data transfers.

  2. “10,000 times the broadband speeds of today”

In whole article there is no numbers like what will be the speed like? 1 Gbps? 10 Gbps?

and how do you define current broad band speed? 10 kbps? 100 kbps? 1 mbps?

  3. Tim Berners-Lee didn’t create the internet, he created the World Wide Web.
