Hindi portals are in rage. After Web18 launched Josh18 all the media companies are following the herd mentality of hindi sites. So recently business standard launched its hindi portal and even oneindia launched thatshindi.com and now NDTV has launched another one. It seems with the growth and penetration of the internet and with hindi being the most used language by Indian internet users after english a lot of media and internet players will look to lure this target audience with hindi centric sites.

We had questioned josh18’s positioning of a hindi site for the youth and had got a lot of contrary responses from users. It does seem that there exists a staunch following for hindi centric websites in the online community. Though currently it is very difficult to put a number to how many of such users really do exist but the ones that ive come across are quite the evangelistic sort who use hindi in many innovative ways.

Also this could be the very reason why orkut added hindi scrapping ability as it realised that there existed a community of sorts of hindi literature and text readers and followers on the web. On the whole it does seem that there exists a market for hindi but its surely not as large as chinese is in china. For most players entering this segment it will be a wait and watch scenario as the total numbers on the web scale.

  1. There is definetly a market for hindi portals. I guess hindi portals will find good traffic coming from smaller towns.
Finding traction in metropolitans could be difficult.

  2. it is interesting that you still not believe that Hindi is a popular language amongst Indian internet users. Just follow the forums at the popular portals like rediff, sify and so on; you’ll clearly see that there is a huge number of users who comment in their own brand of hinglish.

I agree that this is not a very scientific way and can not give you statistics but it would be enough to change your opinion or at the very least to give you a feel.

well, the people u r mentioning of here do ritye in hindi but use english vocabulory and not Hindi……..future of the hindi sites as I feel is great thats y more and more companies r creating their sites in hindi to target the hindi speaking audience….this is all related to target marketing concept……

  5. @Ankit : You are totally wrong my dear frnd.. just take an example of my hindi blog.. its getting 150-250 hits per day(i know this is bad for eng blogs but in hindi it is an above avg hits).. and 40% hits i’m getting from out side of india(max from Canada & USA and some what also from Jermany).. in india max hits are from Delhi, Mumbai & Bangalore.. only 10-15% hits i’m getting from small towns.. :)
