In the WAT (Web, Advertising and Technology) Space it seems to be a phase of tieups where companies are trying to build core value by partnering with others. This is especially being seen in the travel space. Lets look at two such tieups which happened recently:

Makemytrip Ties Up with IBM Daksh To Outsource Contact Centre Ops

makemytrip daksh

Its common knowledge that even in the age of online booking and several OTA’s offering state of the art online experience phone travel booking are still a sizeable piece of the travel bookings pie. So its no surprise that makemytrip one of the larger OTA’s has over 400-500 contact centre employees. Now inorder to make sure that its focussing on building its offline presence and also focussing on its core competency to build a strong travel brand Makemytrip has chosen to outsource its contact centre to IBM Daksh. So over 400 employees of makemytrip will now be on IBM Daksh’s pay rolls which will act as outsourcing contact centre for Makemytrip.com.

Tata Tele ties up with Paymate For Flight Bookings on Mobile

Tata Teleservices Ltd has tied up with  PayMate to provide domestic flight booking on Tata Indicom phones. To book flights Tata Indicom customers would have to download a application which allows the to book tickets and also make payments through credit card on the phone itself.

According to Ajay Adiseshann, Founder and Managing Director, PayMate “PayMate will be leveraging its association with travel portals such as makemytrip.com and travelmart.com to enable customers to search for the cheapest airfares. Partnering with Tata Indicom will just make this facility available across several million handsets in one go and provide an extremely convenient ticketing channel for customers,”

The charges for the application vary from Rs 10 for a three-day trial up to Rs 30 a month.

Both of the above tie ups signal at the use of mobiles/phones for travel booking. It just goes to show that though a convenient medium internet stand along cannot be a profitable model for transaction based websites. There has to be offline and mobile/call in aspect to the ecommerce. Atleast with the current state of internet penetration beyond a point ecommerce/ticketing based businesses have to look at avenues other than just the internet to achieve a bigger scale of transactions.
