Yahoo and Computational Research Laboratories have joined hands for conducting research in the upcoming field of Cloud Computing. CLR, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Tata Sons will be providing the supercomputers for the research work. CRL’s supercomputer is one of the top five in the world.
Ranked fourth in the world, CRL’s supercomputer, known as EKA has 14,400 processors with 28 Terabytes of memory and 140 Terabytes of disk space. With a peak performance of 18-trillion calculations per second (180 teraflops), the CRL’s computer will be providing the cutting edge computational power to the researchers from Yahoo.
S. Ramadorai, chairman of CRL said
“The Tata group has always contributed to scientific research in India, and the EKA will strengthen this cause further in the field of cloud computing. This partnership brings together Yahoo!’s leadership role in the development of Hadoop and CRL’s expertise in high performance computing, and will help bridge the gap between traditional supercomputing and cloud computing research in India,”
Hadoop is Open Source distributed computing project by Apache Software Foundation. Yahoo has been working on the platform for a while now. Yahoo will be using its expertise in Hadoop for the research.
Ron Brachman, vice president and head of academic relations for Yahoo! said
“We have made our leadership in supporting academic, cloud computing
research very concrete by sharing a 4,000-processor supercomputer with computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University for the last three months. With this supercomputing cluster, researchers were able to analyze hundreds of millions of Web documents and handle two orders of magnitude more data than they previous could. Launching our cloud computing program internationally with CRL is another significant milestone in creating a global, collaborative research community working to advance the new sciences of the Internet.”
Core research is what India needs to move up the value chain. There have been concerns regarding a lack of inclination towards research in the Indian youth. Initiatives like these can attract a lot of good talent primarily because of the brand value of Yahoo! And Tatas. Not to mention, this could be an important step into building a world class research ecosystem in the country. This may lead to us finally producing successful software products.

Dear Sir,
Our teachers and Students have developed a innovative technological solution for detecting vehicle accident on road automatically.
We need your collaboration in this research, if found viable by you.
If this research suceeds then it is certain to open a new market for mobile operators and extend immidiate help for accident victims.
Yours Faithfully
