Well India is soon going to take over the US numbers as far as mobile subscriber base is concerned. That would put India in no.2 position in the world by April according to TRAI which will be behind the mobile giant China which has 560 million subscribers which is more than double of what India has currently.

But as mention in an earlier post India seems to be having the fastest growth rate as far as mobile subscribers goes (even faster than china). So it does seem that Indian Mobile scene cumulatively i.e. if you put the size and the growth rate together becomes one of the world’s most lucrative market.

What remains to be seen is how will the operator play pan out post number portability as and when that comes in and also how VAS players and bundled subscription schemes becomes important post number portability.

Also after Virgin’s entry into the Indian market and its price competitive approach im sure more and more price benefits will be passed on to the consumer as the competitiveness among players grows to get a bigger share of the next 200 million mobile subscribers.

  1. In my opinion, Telecom already spends a large amount of money to sign up the customer. With number portability, telco’s will bet on locked phones and plans with free handset and low rental. This will also big telecom players to bully the new entrants. Also I expect them to put more effort of keeping customer happy [which can mean giving lesser info to user].

Also, I see telcos with poor customer service to launch schemes with large discounts against long terms commitment.

  2. Oh god.. this is a cruel world.. Once upon a time, i got my first mobile phone in 1999.. and started impressing the girls..
But now everyone is having their own cell phone.. Indian Gov. as well as Mobile service providers are not trying to understand my feelings.. :(
    :D
