Will Every Device Will Be Internet Enabled In The Future? – Oracle Does Think So..

Just read an article in ET where Senior VP of R&D of Oracle Corp has some interesting insights into the future of the world and devices. In answer to a question on What will be the future of technology? Kevin has the following to say:

“the next thing we may see is that everything is ultimately going to be connected to a network most probably the Internet. It will allow every device to produce and consume data and give you a certain result. For instance, today’s digital camera didn’t exist a few years ago. Nowadays they have petabytes of storage. And now digital cameras even have Wi-Fi and internet connectivity. So, in couple of years you are not going to upload your pictures on the web. When you take pictures, it will show up on Flickr immediately. In fact, when you take a picture it might show up on your friend’s mobile phone immediately, it depends what you want to do. More and more information will be produced the next generation, through guess what, Sensors. Sensors are going to be embedded in most things. They will start producing information that will allow us to connect the physical world to the virtual world. Sensors data is going to flow into internet which means things will be able to talk to each other.”

Kevin also stated that Oracle would be eyeing the online gaming and digital entertainment spaces as ones where they can use their expertise to provide Oracle enterprise technology that can be used for making animated films or digital films.

It does seem like India is becoming a hotbed for digital gaming and entertainment and with the rise in consumption and spending power among a really young country I wouldnt be surprised if I see more and more player vying for a piece of this pie. With respect to every device being internet enabled I completely agree though the interesting thing will be how AI (Artificial Intelligence) comes in to play to make sure the real power of the data on the web in leveraged.

  1. Rajiv,

I guess Kevin is right.Internet as a medium has given users the ability to express themselves/share content/communicate.

Hence every new consumer device would want to give its users internet connectivity and the ability to send/share info.If this starts happening on a ‘real time’ basis -what more does one want

  2. hey Rajiv,
Check out this interview I had with the CEO of Orange Business Services… she said some similar stuff.
