Well if there was any way to ratify the online auctions model (even after the success of ebay!) then you should do a dekho at saffronart.com the online auctions site for art which we have covered earlier as well and also contemplated whether art 2.0 is the next boom. But the reason to blog again on saffronart is because its recent auction has raked in sales of over Rs. 27 crores (US$ 7.15 million) from over over 550 registered bidders from 20 countries.

The highest priced sale was the art piece “An Actor at Play (Cuckoonebulopolis)” which fetched around Rs. 2.12 crores.

Dinesh Vazirani, Co-founder and Director of Saffronart said “I think the results of this auction are extremely encouraging. We were pleasantly surprised at the overwhelming response we saw. The results have reinforced our belief that the blending of global and local contexts that characterises Contemporary Indian helps it transcend geographical barriers and appeal to an international audience of collectors.”

There is also indiatimes art which is saffron arts competitor. It seems like art is a great segment to venture into. I guess all those looking at social networks should try their hand at an art social network as this market seems to be relatively less crowded online atleast as far as the indian contemporary art is concerned.
